Ryan Alexander-Tanner began teaching in after-school programs shortly after receiving a BFA in 2005. A few years later he was hired to co-author and illustrate To Teach: the Journey, In Comics, a collaboration with radical educator Bill Ayers. The process of adapting the philosophy and approach to teaching described within the text deeply evolved his own practice as an educator. He has taught comics and illustration classes at all levels, from early grade school to college, and always incorporates the same core philosophies: teaching is about recognizing the inherent potential in all learners, each student should be individually assessed and addressed, teaching is an exchange between two people who are both learning from one another, and that a teacher’s job is to create a dynamic, engaging and welcoming space for learning. He has also worked with educators on how to incorporate comics into their curriculum. He is available to teach classes and workshops, instructional seminars and one-on-one lessons.
